WHAT TO EXPECT

Assessment and Formulation

During our first few sessions, we will begin with an assessment and formulation period in order to develop an understanding of your difficulties and to develop a therapy plan tailored to your needs.

During this stage, I hope to provide you with a safe space where you can share your story and we can begin to develop a shared understanding of your difficulties, your experiences which may have shaped these and what maintains them, alongside thinking about your strengths and goals. This is known as a formulation.

From this formulation, we can then develop a personalised approach to therapy based on your individual needs and at a pace that works for you.

If at this stage, for any reason you no longer wish to continue to work with me, there is no obligation to continue. You may decide this for a number of reasons, for example, for some, the formulation stage can be therapeutic in itself in helping you to understand and try to make changes independently. It may also be that you may not feel ready for therapy at this time, or it may be more appropriate for you to be signposted to a different professional who may be better placed to support you.
